Video Without Boundaries has announced its new Flyboy HD, a breakthrough in video quality for entertainment lovers on the go.Featuring an innovative 960 x 234 pixel backlit LCD display, the Flyboy HD plays home video, recorded TV programs, movies, video podcasts and more with a clarity and brightness that rivals screens many times its size.
The Flyboy HD's 20GB Hard Disk Drive (HDD), Secure Digital (SD) card slot, and USB 2.0 support enables users to store, transfer, and organize the full range of digital entertainment, from thousands of MP3 songs to over 100,000 still photos or up to 20 movies. Add the Flyboy HD's optional MPEG-4 video camcorder module, and you can capture live A/V video of any activity or occasion, storing it on the internal HDD or plug-in SD card. The Flyboy HD's high-resolution color LCD is supported by LED backlight technology that offers the brightest picture possible. Even in direct sunlight, viewers can enjoy their favorite movie or photo album without difficulty.
Flyboy HD can record movies or television programs in top quality MPEG-4 format, with a simple one cord connection to DVD players, VCRs, or cable and satellite set-top boxes. Adding to the Flyboy HD's versatility is its ability to output sound and images to an external TV or projector using the device's NTSC/PAL audio/video output cables. Via the USB 2.0 port, recorded video can also be transferred to a PC for backup or playback.
Also new in the Flyboy HD's list of features is a 3X zoom in/out function for the digital photo album. Select from full-screen or thumbnail viewing for faster navigation; a two-speed auto slideshow function turns the Flyboy HD into a personal photo gallery.
For music enjoyment, the Flyboy HD supports MP3 and RM format audio files with full file management and jukebox features. A keyboard function allows users to create personal names for their files to make organization easier.
Rounding out the Flyboy HD's multimedia capabilities is a Digital Voice Recorder with built-in microphone. Users can record up to 910 hours of lectures, meetings, speeches or other voice input on the internal HDD using the timer function and play back the recordings on the unit's onboard stereo speakers or high fidelity ear buds (included).
Pricing and Availability
Flyboy HDâ„¢ comes complete with Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery, auto-voltage DC adapter/charger, infrared remote control, USB and A/V cables, ear buds, carrying pouch and software CD, with optional camcorder module available. The unit carries an MSRP under 0 (USD) and will begin shipping to leading computer and consumer electronics distributors and retailers beginning in Q1 of 2006. Additionally, the Flyboy HD will be on display at the International CES in Las Vegas, Nevada January 5-8, 2006.

Canon have announced that they're teaming up with Toshiba to create ultra-thin HDTVs, possibly coming in early 2008. It would use Surface-conduction Elecrron-emitter Display (SED) technology, and could be even thinner than today's LCD and plasma sets.
Their first task is to build a production plant in Taishi, costing the equivalent of $1.5bn. That's some serious investment. Production could hit 75,000 units per month when it gets going.
Though SED technology is arguably superior to current LCD and plasma, it is a much newer one, and hence likely to be more expensive. Whether it will be able to gain a foothold in the market remains to be seen - better quality doesn't always translate into market share, particularly if other technologies have captured majority market share.
It's interesting to see another company not traditionally associated with TV entering the market. Will the initial heavy investment in this new technology and its production translate into eventual profit, as other display technology continues to drop in price? Time will tell.
